Talisman Academy - School for Asperger's Students
Talisman Academy is a residential academic alternative for adolescents and young adults ages 12 to 20 with Asperger's Syndrome, High-Functioning Autism, and similar spectrum disorders. We focus on improving social awareness and interaction, independence, and academic self-motivation. In addition to specialized classroom time, our small learning groups (8 or 10 students and 2 staff) take part in wilderness and learning trips that immerse them in multi-sensory lessons in natural and cultural history, geography, and scientific exploration. On and off campus, students practice independent living skills and group dynamics, and engage in focused social skills groups. The academic program is a journey that enables students - who may have struggled in more traditional environments - to seek social confidence and their full potential for life success
Talisman Camps & Programs
Talisman programs offer camps for children ages 6 to 17 and young adults 18-21 with LD, ADD and ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, and high functioning autism. Talisman has been offering such experiences since 1980 and is ACA accredited. Our unique summer camps specialize in creating camps that offer not only adventure, but learning experiences, for children and teenagers with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism. Talisman provides parents with unique alternatives to ordinary summer camps that cannot focus on their child's special needs.
Camp Huntington is a co-ed, residential, seven-week program for children and young adults with a variety of special needs. Our program is designed to maximize a child's potential and develop their strengths and hidden abilities. We offer a unique program approach we've developed: Adaptive Therapeutic Recreation. Your child will enjoy the fun-filled days of summer camp while learning practical life skills. All our activities are instructional in nature. Our activities are designed to stimulate a child's awareness and interest in their environment and in relationships, while building their confidence, self-esteem and growth towards independence.
Our wilderness program offers students with Asperger's syndrome a profoundly effective experience - through "experiential learning" - one of the best ways to help kids with Asperger's - they learn how to interact with their peers and they develop coping methods and tools to improve their understanding of how to act within a social group. For many of these kids, they experience for the first time a real sense of belonging.
